PHCNWorkersDeserveBetter: End 13 Years of Betrayal After Privatisation
Petition Text:
To: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Federal Ministry of Power, NLC President Joe Ajaero, PENCOM, Bureau of Public Enterprises
From: Concerned Nigerians + Former PHCN Workers
We demand immediate payment of all outstanding entitlements owed to 47,000 former workers of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
The Problem:
Since the privatisation of PHCN in 2013, former electricity workers have been abandoned. According to an open letter by former PHCN Public Affairs Manager, Chijioke Igolo, dated July 2026, government and labour leaders have failed to pay what is due.
For 13 years, these men and women who kept Nigeria’s lights on have been owed:
1. 16 months of unpaid salaries
2. 10% equity entitlement from the privatized power companies
3. Federal Government’s 7.5% pension contribution
4. Other severance and benefits
Many are now elderly, sick, and dying in poverty while waiting for their money. Families have lost homes. Children have dropped out of school.
The Betrayal:
The same union leaders who were supposed to fight for these workers are now being accused of collaborating to block payment. Workers have protested, written letters, and begged for over a decade. Nothing has changed.
Our Demands:
1. Immediate payment of all 16 months outstanding salaries and benefits to the 47,000 PHCN workers.
2. Release of 10% equity shares and 7.5% FG pension contribution owed since 2013.
3. Independent audit by PENCOM and BPE of all PHCN entitlements with a public payment timeline within 30 days.
4. Presidential intervention by President Tinubu to resolve this once and for all.
These workers sacrificed their careers for public service. The government signed an agreement during privatization. It is time to honor it.
Mr. President, do not let another generation of PHCN workers die waiting for what is rightfully theirs.
