We, the concerned citizens of Nigeria and members of the global Nigerian community, write to express our deep outrage, distress, and condemnation regarding the recent reports of the sexual assault of a young woman in broad daylight during the Zoro Festival in Delta State.
This incident is not only deeply disturbing but also represents a grave violation of human dignity, safety, and the rule of law. The fact that such an act could occur publicly, during a cultural event, raises serious concerns about the safety of women and girls, as well as the enforcement of law and order within the state.
We find this situation profoundly disgraceful and unacceptable. It calls into question the effectiveness of existing protections for women and the level of accountability among those responsible for maintaining public safety.
In light of this, we respectfully demand clear and immediate answers to the following:
-
Who is responsible for overseeing security during such public events, and what measures were in place at the time of the incident?
-
What actions have been taken by the Delta State Government, including the Office of the Governor, to address this incident?
-
What steps are being taken by the Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives to ensure justice and prevent similar occurrences nationwide?
-
What role has the Local Government Chairman of the affected area played in responding to this matter?
-
Have any arrests been made, and have the perpetrators been identified and brought to justice?
Furthermore, we call on your office to:
-
Launch a full and transparent investigation into the incident.
-
Ensure that all individuals involved in the assault are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
-
Provide immediate support and protection for the victim.
-
Implement stronger safeguards and security measures at public events to protect women and girls.
-
Work with relevant authorities to promote awareness, accountability, and zero tolerance for sexual violence.
Nigeria must not become a place where lawlessness prevails and where women and girls live in fear. The protection of citizens, especially the most vulnerable, must remain a top priority of government at all levels.
We urge your office to act decisively and demonstrate a strong commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
We await your prompt response and meaningful action.
Yours faithfully,
Concerned Citizens of Nigeria
Justin Majek
