For a minimum of 20 years, the last section of Carel Orthmann Road in Ward 7 has had no street lighting. This part of the road remains in complete darkness every night, while the rest of the neighbourhood has proper lighting. Residents in this area have lived with the same problem for decades without meaningful action.
The absence of street lights creates ongoing safety concerns; visibility is poor for both drivers and pedestrians, and the darkness increases vulnerability to crime. Daily life is affected, as residents struggle to move safely after sunset, check their homes, or receive visitors and deliveries. The conditions on this section of the road place residents at a clear disadvantage compared to the rest of the community.
Street lighting requires cooperation between Eskom and the Municipality; both entities must coordinate to install and maintain lights in areas that have been historically overlooked. Ensuring proper lighting on the final stretch of Carel Orthmann Road is essential for community safety and fair service delivery. We are requesting that this section be prioritised so it can finally receive the lighting it needs.
