We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Nigeria, respectfully submit this petition to express deep concern over the growing trend of breeding, selling, and keeping extremely powerful and potentially dangerous dog breeds in Nigeria without adequate regulation.
Dogs are loyal animals and can be good companions when properly bred, trained, and managed. However, the unregulated proliferation of highly aggressive and difficult-to-control dog breeds poses a serious risk to public safety, particularly in residential communities.
The Growing Problem
In Europe, the United States, and other parts of the world, dog breeding has developed over centuries, supported by:
-
Strict breeding standards
-
Licensing systems
-
Professional training requirements
-
Clear legal accountability for owners
In contrast, Nigeria is witnessing a new and troubling trend where:
-
Extremely powerful and aggressive dog breeds are imported or bred locally
-
These breeds often require expert handling and advanced training
-
Dogs are sold to individuals who lack the knowledge, experience, or facilities to control them
-
Profit motives appear to outweigh public safety considerations
This situation has led to increasing fear within communities and raises the risk of serious injury or loss of life, particularly involving children and vulnerable persons.
Public Safety Concerns
Many of these powerful dog breeds are known to require:
-
Professional training by certified experts
-
Controlled environments
-
Strict behavioural management
When such dogs are kept in densely populated neighbourhoods without proper safeguards, the consequences can be tragic. Selling these animals to untrained individuals is not only irresponsible but dangerous.
International Precedents
In countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and across Europe, citizens have repeatedly called on their governments to:
-
Restrict or regulate dangerous dog breeds
-
Introduce breed-specific legislation
-
Enforce licensing, insurance, and training requirements
-
Protect communities from preventable harm
Nigeria should not wait for serious incidents before taking action.
Our Demands
We respectfully call on the Nigerian Government to:
-
Introduce national legislation regulating the breeding, importation, and ownership of dangerous dog breeds
-
Establish a licensing system for breeders and owners of powerful dogs
-
Require mandatory training and certification for owners of high-risk breeds
-
Restrict the sale of dangerous breeds to unqualified individuals
-
Empower law enforcement agencies to monitor, enforce, and penalise violations
-
Educate the public on responsible dog ownership and animal welfare
Conclusion
This petition is not an attack on dogs or responsible dog owners. It is a call for common-sense regulation, public safety, and accountability.
A society must protect its people while promoting responsible animal ownership. Allowing the unchecked spread of dangerous dog breeds puts lives at risk and undermines community safety.
We urge the Nigerian Government to act now, before preventable tragedies occur.
