We, the undersigned citizens and stakeholders, respectfully submit this petition to appeal for the conversion of the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road into a Federal Expressway.
This petition follows up on our earlier correspondence submitted in 2023, in which we formally requested the inclusion of this critical road in the Federal Government’s road infrastructure development plans. Regrettably, despite its strategic importance, the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road was not included in the recently announced federal road projects.
Historical and Strategic Importance of the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road
The Abeokuta–Ibadan Road serves as a vital transportation corridor linking Abeokuta and Ibadan, while also connecting Ogun Central and Ogun West in the northern axis of Ogun State.
This road has remained largely neglected since the 1960s, resulting in:
-
Severe deterioration
-
Increased travel time
-
Frequent accidents
-
Economic hardship for commuters and businesses
Despite its importance, the road has not received the level of federal intervention commensurate with its role in regional mobility and economic development.
Economic and Developmental Impact
Upgrading the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road to an expressway would yield significant national and regional benefits, including:
1. Economic Growth
Improved road connectivity would stimulate trade and commercial activities across Ogun Central and Ogun West, unlocking long-suppressed economic potential and encouraging investment.
2. Traffic Decongestion
The expressway would function as a strategic alternative and feeder route to the heavily congested Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, reducing pressure, travel time, and transport costs.
3. Regional Inclusion and Access
An upgraded road would enhance access to historically underserved areas such as Eruwa, Orile Ilugun, and Olokemeji, fostering inclusive development and improving the quality of life for residents.
Alignment with Ogun State Infrastructure Vision
We acknowledge and commend the proactive infrastructural initiatives of the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Dapo Abiodun. The state government has demonstrated commitment by:
-
Announcing plans to reconstruct the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway
-
Approving the reconstruction of major corridors, including the Abule Egba–Ota/Sango–Abeokuta Expressway
These efforts highlight the strategic importance of road infrastructure in Ogun State and underscore the need for federal collaboration, particularly for roads of interstate significance such as the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road.
Our Appeal
In light of the above, we respectfully urge the Federal Ministry of Works to:
-
Include the Abeokuta–Ibadan Road in future federal road development and expressway conversion projects
-
Conduct feasibility studies and planning for its upgrade
-
Prioritise the road as a strategic national infrastructure asset
We firmly believe that converting this road into an expressway will:
-
Strengthen regional integration
-
Promote economic resilience
-
Improve road safety
-
Enhance national transportation efficiency
Conclusion
The Abeokuta–Ibadan Road is not merely a local route; it is a strategic economic and historical corridor whose neglect has lasted far too long. Upgrading it to an expressway would represent a forward-looking investment in Nigeria’s infrastructure, economy, and people.
We respectfully request urgent and favourable consideration of this petition in the interest of national development and the improvement of citizens’ quality of life.
