This is a disturbing menace that have spread like a virus across the state. The rate at which house rents are been increased even in places that have no good roads and constant electricity is alarming and if not addressed would lead to majority of tenants under this harsh economy situation homeless. Many would have to settle down in areas that are even hazardous to there health because it is of the low rent rate in such areas

Places like Ota, Abeokuta are seen to be places where this menace is of the increase.

The one that is of greater concern is that of the so called Agents imposing fees almost at the same rate with the house rents.

Generally, Agency Fees for tenancy agreements is 10% of the tenancy rates. For instance, if the property is going for N500,000 per annum, the agency fee will be 10% of N500,000 which amounts to N50,000 for one year and if the agent is collecting 2 years rent, that’s N50,000 x 2 years which is N100,000 but in areas like Ota and Abeokuta, the Agent fee is more than 50%. This deleterious act must be curbed because the masses are really suffering from this unlawful extortion.

It is a real menace because even the elites that are Landlords engage in this nefarious behavior.

We need swift intervention in Ogun State like Lagos State Government have moved to stop this high level of  exploitation
